Wir laden euch herzlich ein in die AKKA Paderborn (@akka_paderborn) zu einer Doppelvorstellung mit zwei Filmen des legendären Ausnahmeregisseurs Fred Halsted, welche sich Hals über Kopf in die untergründigen Strömungen der Lust und des Stadtlebens stürzen.
THE SEX GARAGE und LA PLAYS ITSELF sind einzigartige Synthesen aus Pornografie, Experiment und Dokumentarismus, welche ungewohnte Einblicke in die (queere) Urbanität amerikanischer Großstädte und die Subversion gesellschaftlicher Normen in den 1970er Jahren ermöglichen. LA PLAYS ITSELF war der erste US-Hardcore-Kinofilm, der in Printmedien offen als ‘homosexual film’ beworben wurde, und nicht – wie sonst üblich – als ‘all male feature’ oder einen vergleichbaren Eupehmismus. Das war ein bewusstes Anliegen Halsteds, das sich in den meisten Zeitungen auch durchsetzte (andere Elemente des Artworks – z.B. Zunge und Stiefel – wurden hingegen öfter zensiert).
Das PaderPorn Filmfestival zeigt in freundlicher Zusammenarbeit mit Programmkino Lichtblick e. V. (@programmkinolichtblick) und der AKKA beide 1972 enstandenen Filme
(Gesamtlänge ca. 90 Min.), welche 2021 unter Mithilfe des Museum of Modern Art in New York restauriert wurden. Wir schätzen uns glücklich, dass Filmhistoriker Christoph Draxtra uns am 01. Juni zur Seite stehen und etwas Licht in die komplexe Produktions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte dieses bahn- und genrebrechenden Wegbereiters geben wird. Wir sehen uns in der AKKA!

We cordially invite you to the AKKA Paderborn (@akka_paderborn) for a double screening of two films by legendary director Fred Halsted, which plunge headlong into the underground currents of lust and city life.
THE SEX GARAGE and LA PLAYS ITSELF are unique blends of pornography, avant-garde and documentary, which provide unusual insights into the (queer) urbanity of American cities and the subversion of social norms in the 1970s. LA PLAYS ITSELF was the first hardcore U.S. motion picture to be openly advertised in print as a ‘homosexual film’, rather than – as was usually the case – an ‘all male feature’ or a comparable euphemism. This was a deliberate strategy of Halsted’s, and one that prevailed in most newspapers (other elements of the artwork – e.g., the tongue and boots – were often censored, however).
The PaderPorn film festival shows both films in friendly cooperation with Programmkino Lichtblick e. V. (@programmkinolichtblick) and AKKA (total length approx. 90 min.), which were restored in 2021 with the help of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. We are very pleased that film historian Christoph Draxtra will join us on June 1st to shed some light on the complex production and reception history of this groundbreaking and genre-defying game changer.
